Job Summary:

Operating under the direct supervision of the Physician Assistant Program Director, the Physician Assistant Program Assistant Director provides leadership and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Physician Assistant Program. This position works collaboratively across the School of Medicine and Public Health and with colleagues throughout partner Health Care organizations to effectively implement the didactic and clinical learning opportunities of students. The Assistant Director is also actively involved in the oversight of program budget, innovative curriculum development, personnel management, research/scholarship, all parts of program assessment, and the ARC-PA Accreditation process. In the absence of the Program Director, the Assistant Director may be asked to represent the program at events inside the University and within the community. A diverse knowledge base and skill set are highly desirable, along with continued time in clinical practice to maintain skills.

This position supervises 5-8 administrative staff, providing mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities while fostering a cohesive team environment across 3 campuses. This role requires the individual to embody a strong sense of personal and professional integrity, and a high degree of cultural awareness and confidentiality, especially when engaging in sensitive situations with students. Furthermore, the Assistant Director provides guidance and support to other staff members to facilitate effective communication in similar situations.

Responsibilities:

Job Responsibilities:

1. Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees - 20%

2. Collaborates with faculty members to develop student academic programs and agendas, directs implementation, and creates curricular structure including operational and logistical arrangements- 10%

3. Formulates program strategies and goals, directs long-term planning, develops policies and procedures, and establishes and maintains new and emerging program materials - 15%

4. Evaluates operations and outcomes to ensure alignment with organizational goals - 15%

5. Serves as the principal liaison between the program, University leadership, and outside entities - 5%

6. May provide guidance to faculty regarding funding, staffing, and space implications - 5%

7. Develops the unit budget and approves unit expenditures - 10%

8. Manages student academic program(s) - 5%

9. Actively participates in the process of reviewing applications, interviewing candidates, and selecting students for admission - 5%

10. Serve as didactic faculty and engage in assigned teaching responsibilities - 10%

Education:

Required

Master of Science in Physician Assistant studies with current NCCPA certification

Preferred

PhD, EdD, or related terminal degree from an accredited University

Qualifications:

Required:

- Minimum 5 years experience practicing as a PA

- Minimum 5 years teaching and advising PA students

- Proven leadership and supervisory experience

- Knowledge of PA education accreditation process

Preferred:

- Understanding of complex dynamics in a large University and across health care systems

- Ability to understand departmental budgets with complex income sources, including grant funding

- Experience with grant writing and oversight

- Exhibits strong communication skills and proactive problem solving in relation to program personnel, institutional processes, and application of resource

The ideal candidate will have:

- Ability to navigate diverse identities, personalities, and power dynamics while maintaining a culture of trust and collaboration within the team

- Vision and interpersonal skills to build partnerships inside and outside the program

- Understanding of strategic thinking and planning processes

- Ability to perform duties autonomously with minimal supervision and to maintain confidentiality

For an appointment at Clinical Associate Professor or Clinical Professor rank on CT Track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CT Track.
